New smartphone buyers are overwhelmingly choosing Android phones in comparison to iPhones and BlackBerrys, new data from Nielsen reveals.

Below you can see Nielsen’s subscriber share numbers. On the left are the total subscriber share numbers. On the right is the subscriber share numbers for the three months ended in August, which is a better predictor of the future of the market.

As you can see, in the three month period 56% of buyers opted for Android, versus just 28% for Apple. Rough for Apple, but if there’s a positive in there, it’s that Apple’s subscriber share is holding steady while Android eats up BlackBerry share and share from “other”.

But, with the iPhone hitting Verizon, we thought Apple would be in better shape in the U.S. Maybe once the iPhone 5 arrives, we’ll see a tilt? Or, maybe Android keeps running away with this thing.

According to Ma Bell, AT&T covers 97 percent of all Americans. Of course, that’s including those “one bar of EDGE” places that are uncovered so far as reality’s concerned, but regardless of all that — there’s no denying that AT&T’s LTE launch is on the subdued side. With Verizon rolling out five times more LTE markets this month than AT&T is even launching with, the country’s largest GSM carrier definitely has some catching up to do. Regardless of the standings, the company appears to have (quietly) gone live with five LTE markets as of today, with Chicago, Atlanta, San Antonio, Dallas / Fort Worth and Houston getting first dibs. The source link below takes you to the new coverage map, as well as to a promise from the carrier to expand “4G LTE” (not to be confused with the other 4G, more accurately known as HSPA+) to 15 major metropolitan areas by the year’s end. Notice how rural areas aren’t mentioned, despite plenty of grandstanding near D.C.? Don’t worry, guys — it’s just Rethinking Possible.

According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, developer support for Android has been waning despite its incredible growth.

Flurry tracks the activity of 45,000 developers who have built 90,000 different applications. Every time a developer starts a new project, Flurry knows which platform the developer is working on. 

As you can see below, a smaller share of developers started Android projects in the second quarter of the year than the first. Flurry speculates the change was driven by the Verizon iPhone and the popularity of the iPad 2.

Whatever the reason, it’s good news for Apple.

Growth in purchases of Android smartphones in the U.S. has stalled this year, according to a new report from Nielsen.

Android still has the largest share of the smartphone market, but thanks to the Verizon iPhone, its share of new phone buyers has flatlined. Apple’s share has picked up, moving from 10% of new smartphone purchases to 17% of new smartphone purchases this year.

This is a nice change of pace for Apple which had been getting crushed in the smartphone marketshare battle.

According to this chart, Apple is still going to be lagging in overall smartphone share. But, it’s a good sign for Apple that more people are buying iPhones thanks to it being on Verizon.

Another thing to note here: Smartphone purchases are greater than feature phone purchases in the U.S.

Not all wireless carriers are created equal, nor for that matter is all 4G — anyone who’s ever swapped networks or done any sort of traveling across the country can tell you that. And while it seems like we have fewer and fewer choices as the days go by, our increasing reliance on mobile devices makes the efficiency of our data delivery all the more important. PCMag invested some serious man / woman-hours for its annual “Fastest Mobile Networks” story, gathering mobile data in 21 cities — running more than 140,000 tests in all. According to the results, Verizon’s LTE rules supreme in pretty much every area tested, save for those “in-between” rural locations, where AT&T nabbed the top spot. Perhaps it’s time to take old “Test Man” out of retirement for celebratory victory lap?

The percentage shift in the chart above tells most of the story here. According to Comscore’s latest report, Android’s share of the US smartphone market grew an impressive six percent in the three-month period ending in March to land at 34.7 percent, and RIM took the biggest hit as a result, slipping 4.5 points to a share of 27.1 percent. That’s still enough to keep it ahead of Apple, however, which held its own with a slight gain to 25.5 percent. Both Microsoft and Palm / HP slipped just under a percent each to land in a distant fourth and fifth place, respectively. As for mobile OEMs, things stayed almost identical during the three month period, with Samsung, LG, and Motorola occupying the top three spots, and only Apple seeing any significant gains thanks to the Verizon iPhone launch — although that still wasn’t enough to push it above RIM for the fourth spot. Apple’s iPhone has gone from zero to half of Apple’s revenue in less than 4 years.

Apple reported $12.3 billion in iPhone sales last quarter, half of its overall revenue, and up 126% year-over-year.

For the first time ever, iPhone revenue didn’t shrink in the March quarter after the busy Christmas quarter before it. (Thanks in large part to launching at Verizon Wireless and SK Telecom during the quarter.)

And if you include iPod touch and iPad sales, Apple now gets about two-thirds of its revenue from iOS devices — a platform that didn’t exist 4 years ago.

But again, what’s most remarkable is how fast Apple is still growing overall as a company. At $24.7 billion in sales last quarter, Apple grew 83% year-over-year. That’s even faster than its 71% year-over-year growth during the Christmas quarter before it. Amazing.
