Google + went public last week and its growth has been explosive. So explosive, it has some people wondering if it’s time to take closer look at the social network.
According to Experian Hitwise, traffic to Google+ climbed to 15 million this week, a 1269 percent growth from the 1.1 million visits the week before. And this figure only includes desktop visits, it doesn’t count mobile traffic from Android and iOS devices or people who visit by clicking on the black Google + toolbar.
Traffic is only one metric. Subscriber base is also important and a recent estimate from Paul Allen suggests Google + is adding two million new users each day and now has a subscriber base of almost 50 million users.
Admittedly, these numbers pale in comparison to Facebook, which has 800 million users and is the undeniable King of the Social networking hill. But you have to wonder about the up and coming Google +. Is it time to steal away from Facebook and Twitter and invest some social networking time into Google’s growing network? I’m starting to think it is. [ReadWriteWeb and Paul Allen]

Although only 43% of small-to-mid-sized businesses (SMBs) currently use tablets, this figure will rise 77% to 76% in 18 months, according to [pdf] a September 2011 survey from Fonality and Webtorials. Results of “The Nature of Mobility in SMB Workforces” indicate the only other mobile device which will see growth among SMB users are specialty/custom-built [...]

Apple’s reported decision to release a new iPhone in the fall, as opposed to the summer, will deliver massive sales, writes RBC analyst Mike Abramsky in a note.
RBC surveyed 2,200 consumers and found “unprecedented demand,” with 31% of consumers very/somewhat likely to buy an iPhone 5, which is stronger than the 25% of consumers that were very/somewhat likely to buy an iPhone 4, when RBC did the same sort of survey before it launched.
Further, Abramsky says that Apple’s delay could cause a bigger upgrade from existing iPhone owners, since the iPhone 4 is 15 months old. He says 66% of existing iPhone owners are very/somewhat likely to buy a new iPhone.
He’s bumping his estimates for Apple’s 2012 fiscal year as a result. He thinks the company sells 110 million iPhones, generates $140 billion in sales overall, and earns $34.50 per share for fiscal 2012.

We make our own truth. That’s how IDC can come up with roughly the same numbers as fellow research firm Canalys and crown Apple the king, when its rival called Android top dog — it’s all about how you slice it. See, where as Canalys bundled all Android handset makers together, IDC has broken them up, which leads to a rather interesting twist — the largest smartphone maker in the world is now Apple. Cupertino’s growth of 141.7-percent in shipments year over year was enough to push it past Nokia (which slipped to number three) and Samsung (which climbed two spots to take the silver medal), while RIM and HTC rounded out the top five. That being said, no one is running away with the lead here, and Sammy’s continued stratospheric rise should keep Apple on guard. Check out the full report after the break.

According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, developer support for Android has been waning despite its incredible growth.
Flurry tracks the activity of 45,000 developers who have built 90,000 different applications. Every time a developer starts a new project, Flurry knows which platform the developer is working on.
As you can see below, a smaller share of developers started Android projects in the second quarter of the year than the first. Flurry speculates the change was driven by the Verizon iPhone and the popularity of the iPad 2.
Whatever the reason, it’s good news for Apple.

Last night Google reported strong earnings with big revenue growth. It also reported that headcount is still soaring upwards, a trend that started a year and half ago. Below we’ve charted Google’s growing headcount, and its flattening revenue per employee.

Whether you believe we’re living in a post-PC world or not, there’s no denying the overwhelming growth of tablets in the past few years. Just this March, IDC put out figures saying 2010 saw the sale of 18 million tablets, but despite the recent boom, the outfit’s now reporting a 28 percent drop in tablet shipments in Q1 2011, bringing first quarter worldwide shipments to 7.2 million. IDC’s latest report points to “slower consumer demand, overall economic conditions, and supply-chain constraint,” but nonetheless estimates that total tablet sales will reach 53.5 million by year’s end, up from IDC’s original estimate of 50.4 million. Once again, Apple’s come out on top of the slate game, with the iPad 2 leading the market, despite its own dip in shipments. E-readers have apparently also seen a decline in the first quarter, with shipments dipping to 3.3 million units. Despite a slow start to the year, however, IDC’s optimistic about future sales, but you don’t have to take our word for it — full PR awaits you after the break.

Here’s another look at the impact of the iPad on the PC industry, courtesy of Jefferies analyst Peter Misek and Dan Frommer of SplatF.
Misek initiated coverage of HP today with a hold rating, and included this chart showing the drop in the growth of HP’s notebook shipments, as well as the drop in the growth PC notebooks overall. (Frommer added the data on Apple’s growth in notebook shipments as a contrast.)
As Frommer points out, “A market that was growing 20% to 40% year-over-year per quarter just a couple of years ago is now basically flat.”
Misek says it’s thanks to the growth of the tablet market: “We believe tablets are cannibalizing consumer notebooks and are the biggest driver in the deterioration of HP’s consumer notebook shipments. We expect tablets to cannibalize more enterprise notebooks as we get into 2012.”
Until someone delivers a credible iPad rival, this trend will continue for all the PC players.

Growth in purchases of Android smartphones in the U.S. has stalled this year, according to a new report from Nielsen.
Android still has the largest share of the smartphone market, but thanks to the Verizon iPhone, its share of new phone buyers has flatlined. Apple’s share has picked up, moving from 10% of new smartphone purchases to 17% of new smartphone purchases this year.
This is a nice change of pace for Apple which had been getting crushed in the smartphone marketshare battle.
According to this chart, Apple is still going to be lagging in overall smartphone share. But, it’s a good sign for Apple that more people are buying iPhones thanks to it being on Verizon.
Another thing to note here: Smartphone purchases are greater than feature phone purchases in the U.S.
